Getting around Aswan
The city is walkable along the corniche, the public ferry crosses to Elephantine for a few pounds, and everything else is a taxi or a hired motorboat with the fare agreed before you get in. There is no bridge to the islands and no metro; the river is the transport network.
The single most useful thing to know here is that the public ferry exists. It runs from the corniche to Elephantine through the day, it costs a fraction of a hired boat, and it is how the island’s residents travel.
For hired boats and taxis, agree three things out loud before you set off: the total fare for the whole trip rather than per stop, how long the driver or boatman will wait, and whether the return is included. Doing that removes almost every dispute travellers report here.

Elephantine, the botanical garden, the west bank and Philae all need a boat. None of them has a bridge or a road you can walk.
Fares are not published here. They move with fuel prices and the season, and a number we printed six months ago becomes the figure you argue about at the jetty. Ask your hotel what a fair rate is on the day — that is a better source than any website, including this one.
