The Unfinished Obelisk

The unfinished obelisk lies in the ancient granite quarries on the southern edge of Aswan, still attached to the bedrock it was being cut from. Work stopped when the granite cracked. It is the only place you can see how an obelisk was made rather than what one looked like — a working quarry floor, not a monument.

Why go

Every obelisk you have ever seen — in Luxor, in Rome, in Paris, in New York — came out of ground like this. Standing on the quarry floor is the one visit in Egypt that is about labour rather than kingship, and it takes forty-five minutes.

Why it matters

Aswan granite is the hard stone of ancient Egypt. Sarcophagi, colossal statues, obelisks and temple thresholds across the whole country were cut here and floated north on the flood.

Fact

Had it been finished, it would have been the largest obelisk known — well over a thousand tonnes and more than forty metres. Because the crack stopped the work, the shaft records every stage of the process instead: the trenches cut around it, the tool marks, and the abandonment itself.

It is usually associated with Hatshepsut, on the grounds of scale and of the obelisks she is known to have commissioned. The attribution is a reasonable reading rather than a signed fact — nothing on the shaft names its patron.

Interpretation
What you’re looking at

A shaft of pink granite lying almost horizontally in the rock, with a trench cut around three of its sides and its underside still joined to the quarry floor. The crack that ended the work runs across it and is easy to find once you know to look.

The trench walls carry the marks of the tools that made them — rows of shallow, rounded depressions rather than chisel cuts, because granite this hard was worked by pounding with harder stone rather than by cutting.

Early or late, and not because of crowds — because the site is a granite bowl with no shade in it, and low sun rakes across the tool marks and makes them visible in a way midday flattens completely.

Forty-five minutes, and worth every one of them — but only if somebody shows you the crack and the pounding marks. Without those it is a large stone in a hole and people leave puzzled. This is the one Aswan site where a guide changes the visit completely and costs almost nothing.

Common mistakes
Going at midday because it is short

Short and unshaded are a bad combination on granite. Low sun also makes the tool marks readable, which is the point of coming.

Skipping it as "just a rock"

It is the only unfinished monumental object of its kind you can walk around. Every finished obelisk hides what this one shows.

Why was it abandoned?

The granite cracked. Once a flaw of that size opens in a monolith there is nothing to be done with it, and the work stopped where it stood.

Was it Hatshepsut’s?

Probably, and it is usually described that way — but nothing on the shaft names a patron, so we mark that as an interpretation rather than a fact.
