The Botanical Garden
A whole small island planted as a botanical garden, in the western channel just north of Elephantine. Locals call it Gezirat el-Nabatat — Plant Island — which is the better name. It is reached only by boat and takes about an hour to walk.

The garden occupies Kitchener’s Island. A boat crossing is part of getting there.
Palms and other trees make this a different kind of Aswan walk. The planting here is illustrative, not a botanical inventory.
Paths lead through the planted island. Take the visit slowly and notice the river between the trees.
Shade, birds and an hour with nothing to understand. On a trip built around temples and heat, an island of old trees is not filler — it is the thing that makes the next site bearable.
The island was planted with species collected from across Africa and Asia and has been maintained as a garden for well over a century. The mature trees are the point; almost nothing else in Upper Egypt has canopy like this.
The English name attaches it to Kitchener, who is said to have been given the island and to have planted it. The garden’s later development is documented; the anecdote is the part usually told loudest.
A single long island laid out with paths, planted beds and rows of mature trees, with benches and a café. Birds are the other reason people come — it is the easiest birdwatching in Aswan.

The easiest site in Aswan with small children — shade, paths, benches, birds and a boat at both ends.
Pair it with a felucca and stop thinking of it as a sight. An hour of shade in the middle of an Aswan itinerary is worth more than a fourth temple, and this is where the sunset sail should start.
